Your First Night
Use bunting and flags above your canopy to tell the public that something exciting is happening at your theatre ….

Display a large banner on theatre front, side wall or car park entrance, this should read - "WELCOME TO MORECAMBE AND WISE IN THEIR HILARIOUS COMEDY HIT SPYLARKS'".

Use a giant invitation card on your front steps featuring a head of each of the stars and a copy line that reads …. "ERNIE AND ERIC INVITE YOU TO BE THEIR GUESTS AT THE OPENING OF THEIR HILARIOUS COMEDY SPYLARKS'".

Invite a selection of your communitie's top news personalities to come along as first night guests; local beauty queens, sports stars civic leaders, etc., can add that touch of glamour to your opening.

Organise, through your local press, a search for couples who have been married for 25 years. This will make a neat press story and picture, and blend in well with the two star's own 25 year partnership.

Have a good quantity of opinion cards to hand so that your patrons can register their opinions of the film as they leave the theatre. An alternative to this can be a huge opinion card on show in your lobby on which patrons can write their views.

With the help of a local tradesman, arrange for a huge cake to be displayed in your lobby to celebrate the two stars first film. Cut-out figures of the stars can be displayed alongside and patrons invited to guess the weight of the cake, which could then be donated to a local charity.

ADVANCE PRESS
In addition to the press coverage that can be achieved by the use of contest blocks, advertising features, etc., there is scope for other ideas to discuss with your local press ….

•Gossip or diary page writers will be interested to hear that Ernie and Eric are due to appear in their first film at your theatre.
•Scene stills will be of interest to Art editors to fill in empty spaces on the editorial pages.
•T.V. feature writers will be interested to use an editorial story and picture keyed to Britain's brilliant television comedians.
•Glamour stills are ideal for filler spots in the editorial pages or for use in football editions.
•Advance editorial mention by film critics is most essential, and you should make certain that your film man is well serviced with material as early as possible.
