Good Afternoon
On the television...

Eric and Ern

On good form
Broadcast in 1973, this edition of Good Afternoon, a magazine programme, featured an interview with Morecambe & Wise by Mavis Nicholson.
This interesting interview begins with some run of the mill questions like “Who is the boss?”, “Who makes the decisions?”, “Did you share a bed?” and “are you a writer?”.
During the majority of the set, Eric is on good form, grinning at the camera and snapping up the feeds that Ernie eloquently gives him.
The studio crew can be heard laughing throughout and it seems everything is going well with all parties enjoying it.
Towards the end though, Mavis begins to look for deeper answers that just aren’t there and at times Eric does look fed up, and gives short answers without his typical humour.
Nothing new is brought out in this interview, but it is still interesting to watch, just to see the dynamic that existed between these two remarkable men.
Things covered include how the act came about, how Eric’s mother got them together, Ernie’s younger days and Eric’s start in show business.
Much of the things said are staple facts that are included in almost every book about them, and Eric actually tells her to read the book at one point.
Overall, a good one to watch, as interviews with Eric and Ern are few and far between.
