My Hero - Eric Morecambe
On the television...

Miranda and Eric

Ann Hamilton

Eddie Braben
This interesting documentary, first broadcast on Friday 29th March 2013, follows Morecambe and Wise fan Miranda Hart on a journey around the UK, to places and people connected to her hero, Eric Morecambe.
The initial section covers her own life and how she got into comedy, eventually leading to her love of Morecambe and Wise.
Starting out in Morecambe, she visits the statue and takes a walk around the Winter Gardens theatre. She visits the house he was born in and ponders why there is no plaque there but it looks like the research was a bit lacking here, as we know there was one (and have photographs) and we also know where it is now!
Sadly this is where the Morecambe bit ends, with no visits to his schools or other places of interest, instead she heads out to meet other people and see other places.
These include a visit to Wales to meet writer Eddie Braben and a chat with Ann Hamilton. She also catches up with Stan Stennet and talks about his final appearance on stage in Tewkesbury.
Finally we head back to Croydon and the theatre were the video Eric and Ern Live was filmed. Again here there was a little lack of detail, with her saying this was them at the top of their game. Yes, it was a brilliant live performance, but not their best due to the restrictions of the theatre and stage. Sadly though, this is the only full live show ever recorded, so we only have this as a gauge.
One surprise was the fibre glass statue we tracked down in 2007. It appears it has been moved to a new location and has finally been renovated back to its former glory. It was nice to see it again after all this time.
Overall, not a bad program, with some interesting sections. Again the only bad points would probably not have been picked up by passive fans or general viewers, but for us loyal followers it seems there has never been one documentary that does not contain errors or incorrect assumptions.
Worth a watch though.
